Am I Getting Addicted To Valium?

Am I Getting Addicted To Valium?

    QUESTION:

    Dear Dr. Heller,

My doctor prescribed Valium for me.  We had a miscommunication and I was taking it when I was seriously jittery or paranoid, so I was taking it a lot.  Maybe 4 times a day for a couple days.  I was taking Prozac, but she switched me to Wellbutrin and Valium.  My family is very concerned about me getting addicted to it, but I’m not.  Shouldn’t it be up to me what kind of treatment I get?

    ANSWER:

Yes, it is up to you and your physician.  Some patients need medications like Valium, although they can clearly be addicting.  It’s a matter of balancing risks against the benefits.  You won’t get addicted to Wellbutrin. Valium is not for paranoia, and you need to discuss this with your physician.
