I Was Just Diagnosed With BPD - What Is It? I WAS JUST DIAGNOSED WITH BPD – WHAT IS IT? I Was Just Diagnosed With BPD - What Is It? Question: Please help.  I have just been labeled BPD, and I am not handling it at all.  In fact I am screaming.  I don’t understand. Dr. Heller’s Answer: The BPD is a malfunction of the trapped, cornered, wounded animal part of your brain.  It causes unprovoked mood swings, chronic anger, emptiness, boredom and emotional pain on a regular basis.  Under stress an epileptic fit called dysphoria (anxiety, rage, depression and despair) develops, steadily worsening.  If it spreads to the temporal lobes symptoms like deja vu, unreality, and looking through someone else’s eyes can develop.It’s medically treatable.  All the mental health diagnoses must be made and treated, as needed dysphoria medication must be available, and retraining the brain is necessary.  There’s a great deal of information on it in the BPD and Ask The Doctor sections. Question: How do you treat the combination of ADHD and BPD?What would be the medical treatment for this combination? Dr. Heller’s Answer: They are separate conditions requiring individual treatment, just as high blood pressure and diabetes require treatment for each disorder.My medical BPD treatment approach is to use Prozac (sometimes in combination with Tegretol) to stop the unprovoked mood swings, the chronic anger, emptiness, boredom and rejection sensitivity.  I prescribe as needed medications: Haldol 2mg / Tegretol 200mg / Risperdal 3mg as needed for dysphoria (anxiety, rage, depression and despair).While the pure hyperactive/impulsive type of ADHD can respond in some individuals to Wellbutrin, the main treatment is with psychostimulants.  They include methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, Metadate, and others) and dexamphetamine (Adderall, Dexedrine).Both disorders require retraining the brain as well. Question: How does one heal from a devastating childhood to a nightmare of a marriage?  I am a 36 year old woman that has now come into realization that I have not lived under normal circumstances.  I am a loving person that now trusts no one!  I have three beautiful daughters and I wanted every one.  I have been despised by my mother and considered stupid for having my children, to the point that my mother not only resents the girls, but she would love nothing more than for me to lose my daughters.  I am battling with a psychopathic ex-husband that has teamed up with my mother in order for me to lose my babies.I am a college student trying to better myself, although I have been told that it is not possible to do this with three children.  If there is any suggestion I will be grateful.  Furthermore, I may not be a doctor, but I can read and this is what these people are.Thank you for your time. Dr. Heller’s Answer: There are 5 things that should be done…1)  See a good therapist ASAP!  This will help in many ways, the most important ones are determining what is real and what isn’t and learning how to cope with your situation. Question: But I am 52 years old!  How the hell can I now be diagnosed as having this awful……disease!!!?I have in the last six years been told that I have depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  Six months ago I had a new doctor who has given me this new title, of which I am not at all impressed.  I am trying to take in new information but I am finding it so difficult.  I must add that my new psychiatrist is very nice and caring(I hope).Please–any help would be great.
