Q.I am taking thyroid medication and 200mg. of Zoloft daily. I have been for 6 months now.
The problem: my once insatiable sex drive is now near “zil” and orgasms, once achieved easily, now are rare. I am very frustrated. Now in the early stages of a new relationship, where my frustration has been discussed, I want to know what can be done?
Zoloft is extremely helpful with depression, anxiety, binge eating, fear of being alone… but I know I cannot live with the unfortunate, and highly frustrating blah sex side effect! Furthermore, I have recently been diagnosed as a sufferer of Borderline Personality Disorder. If you could sum up a pivotal treatment plan, please respond to this as well. Thank you for your help.
A. First of all I did a study comparing Prozac with Zoloft – I had to stop the study because Prozac was so much more effective. You may need to add the epilepsy medication Tegretol (carbamazepine), which means you can use a lower dose of either medication and markedly reduce sexual side effects. The Zoloft may also be increasing symptoms of the generalized anxiety disorder, particularly the cognitive component. When the anxiety increases, sexual function goes down (if you perceived a hungry lion was at your door, it’s unlikely sex would be your main priority).
