Q. My husband has been diagnosed with Intermittent Explosive Rage Disorder. I recognize BPD. When he first went to this doctor (not his first) this doctor spent 30 minutes with my husband and 10 minutes explaining his diagnosis to both of us. I called the doctor to discuss things further. The doctor was not willing to listen.
He is on Wellbutrin. This has helped some but he still displays all the signs of BPD. My question is how can we get a correct diagnosis? His daughter has been diagnosed with bi-polar, BPD sure describes her condition much more accurately.
This site has helped my understanding so much. Thanks for work.
A. There is a non-BPD diagnosis called the “behavioral dyscontrol syndrome.” Both that disorder and the BPD respond to the epilepsy medication tegretol (the BPD requires a week of prozac first). The BPD is too important to ignore.
The diagnostic criteria are listed in the website. If present in virtually every aspect of life since puberty it’s a likely diagnosis.
