    Can Alcohol Cause Seizures?

    QUESTION:

Dear Dr. Heller, What causes someone to have a seizure if they are a known alcoholic? Thank you

    ANSWER:

The withdrawal from alcohol causes chemical changes in brain cells that can result in seizures.  This is particularly true for people with epilepsy, including the borderline personality disorder. The seizures can begin within hours of drinking, or it can be days later.
