CAN ANYTHING BE DONE FOR MY NONFUNCTIONAL SON? 
Question: Hi Dr. Heller, I have looked at your answered questions but do not feel they answer the problem my son has. He is 30 years old, I always knew something was different. He was a quiet placid boy, very intelligent, has very good memory. He was bullied a lot at school, to the point that one day when 17 he was bashed and he just cracked. I believe he had a nervous breakdown at that point. He left school and we employed him, then one day he just couldn’t get up and virtually slept for 6 months. We have since found out he had glandular fever. He now is unable to work as he cannot get quality sleep and is nearly always tired. He has had several sleep studies and has just had another one done. The study shows that he is in a deep sleep, when in fact he is still wide awake. They just throw up their hands and have no answers. In the past he has been admitted to hopsital with sleep deprivation, his skin goes yellow and greyish, it feels like cold fish, his eyes sink into his head. They had to give him so many Valium to get him to sleep. He desperately needs help and they appear to have exhausted all avenues and no one can be bothered anymore. He was once diagnosed with Narcolepsy. They now say it’s Idiopathic sleep disorder and depression. I am hoping you can shed some light on this problem. PLEASE. Dr. Heller’s Answer: As always, I’d recommend he look at the screening test as it usually gives lots of answers:http://pks.947.myftpupload.com/screen.htm If I were faced by a case like his I’d also make sure he’s been checked for iron deficiency (CBC as well as a ferritin), low thyroid to include both a TSH and a free T3, free and total testosterone and a celiac panel to make sure celiac disease isn’t present.
