Can My ADHD Be Treated With My Cyclothymia?

Can My ADHD Be Treated With My Cyclothymia?

    QUESTION:

Dear Dr. Heller, I went for help w/ADD, and was diagnosed Cyclothymic.  (I am probably BPD, as per your screening test.)  Psychiatrist said amphetamines contraindicated.  Tried Depakote; am now on Neurontin 2 weeks: side effects minor.  Feel pretty stabilized…but what can I do about the ADD?

    ANSWER:

Many physicians treat ADD once the mood is stabilized, watching for worsening of the cycling.  If the ADHD is present, and the psychiatrist is unwilling to give a trial of a stimulant (whether an amphetamine or methylphenidate), you could ask for a referral to a psychiatrist or psychopharmacologist who is willing to give it a try.
