I Have BPD and ADD. What Should I Do?

I Have BPD and ADD. What Should I Do?

    QUESTION:

    Dear Dr. Heller,

If a BPD has ADD and is not being medicated for ADD and feels the need for it, what can I do?

    ANSWER:

They both need to be treated. ADD and BPD commonly occur together, and neither will be successfully treated unless both are successfully treated. Adults with ADD also need robust doses of antidepressants and psychostimulants, not child doses (Mass General, J Clin Psychopharmacol, Aug 1995 – “The literature appears to support the use of robust doses of both stimulants and antidepressants for ADHD in adults.”)

You’ll need to find a physician who believes a person should be treated for everything he/she has wrong. There are many scientific articles about ADHD, medication and substance abuse – and the literature indicates psychostimulants like Ritalin actually lower the risk of future substance abuse when the individual has ADHD.
