Is A Learning Disability The Same As AD(H)D?

Is A Learning Disability The Same As AD(H)D?

    QUESTION:

    Dear Dr. Heller,

How long has the term “Attention Deficit Disorder” been used?  Could it have been called “Learning Disability” 24 years ago?  I’m certain my adult son is suffering from ADD (not ADHD) As a ten year-old, he was tested at a local University Psychology Department.  I never got a written report, nor a bill.  An inquiring phone call to the department head got these comments – “he lacks affect” and “there are special public school classes for LD”.  Would you call that a diagnosis for ADD or LD?  He is a very bright 34 year-old ; and now reaching a crisis point in his life with job and family.

    Thanks for any help.

    ANSWER:

AD(H)D used to be called “MBD” – minimal brain dysfunction.  It was renamed within the last twenty years. AD(H)D is one type of learning disability, and it doesn’t cause a lack of affect (mood or emotion). Like everyone else he needs all the treatable diagnoses made and treated.  The screening test I use for my patients will likely be of enormous help to you.
