Is Anafranil Dangerous Long Term, And Can I Prevent Bipolar?

Is Anafranil Dangerous Long Term And Can I Prevent Bipolar?

    QUESTION:

    Dear Dr. Heller,

I was wondering, what are the long term side effects of Anafranil?  When I was 10 years old (I’m 17 now) my GP prescribed them for me without me knowing and my mum gave them to me on a few occasions (without me knowing).  I remember these things literally knocked me out (overdose) and I would fall straight asleep.  I would be very relaxed for the whole of the next day.  I was wondering about the side effects.  I read somewhere that one of them is laughter when getting angry.  Is there a way to prevent bipolar or schizophrenia if it isn’t fully developed yet (without using medications)?

    Thanks.

    ANSWER:

It’s highly unlikely that Anafranil will cause long term problems.  The major side effects are grogginess, constipation and blurred vision. There’s no way to prevent bipolar or schizophrenia at this time.
