IS BUSPAR DANGEROUS? Ask The Doctor Dr. Leland Heller Biological Unhappiness IS BUSPAR DANGEROUS? Question: Dear Doctor,I have a 14 year old son who has High Functioning Autism and suffers from extreme anxiety. When his stress levels are really high he has nose bleeds. Due to the extreme anxiety that he suffers he has been taking BuSpar 20mg daily for the past 2 years. The only research that we have been able to find as regards children was a Dutch study which noted that “the plasma levels in the liver remained elevated”. (or something to that effect.)For the first time in many years my son is attending a mainstream school and appears to be coping with the stresses, while on the BuSpar. The Doctors felt that he needed to know the long term effects as the medication is not readily available for long term use here in Australia. He is now concerned that he may in fact die of liver failure and is torn between living without medication and “killing himself” by continuing to take the BuSpar.I would be very grateful if you could point us in the direction of any further studies on the long term effects of BuSpar – especially in the young.Thank you very much. Dr. Heller’s Answer: BuSpar is one of the safest medications available. Its okay to use in pregnancy and small children. I had a patient take 250 of them in a suicide attempt and nothing happened, including no liver problems. No blood tests are required for monitoring, specifically liver tests do not need to be monitored. 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Ask the Doctor Home MENU: Screening Test “Ask the Doctor” (BPD)Borderline Personality Disorder Annual Updates Biological Unhappiness Disorders & Official Criteria Dr. Heller’s C.V. & Picture How Dr. Heller Got Involved If You Want to See Dr. Heller as a Patient Testimonials Table of Contents for the Book ‘Biological Unhappiness’ How to Order “Life at the Border” Why Read ‘Biological Unhappiness’?
