Question: Hi there, I would like to get some info. re. compulsive talking disorder.  I have a family member who talks in social situations non stop.  She seems unaware that others get extremely frustrated and she won’t stop.  She is extremely bright and will always make note of a sort of class distinction, e.g. “we can’t all be doctors and lawyers”.  She is married to a doctor but she is not a Dr.  I have three other family members and we all cope differently when around her.  She is unfortunately in control of our senior parents care and tends to control situations.  She can be extremely argumentative when challenged with certain questions regarding our parents care.  She will also yell, scream and lash out at people with lies about them and misconstrue the past.  This is usually directed at family members only!  As you can see I need to have more information regarding this.  Please send any info.  Thanks. Dr. Heller’s Answer: The most common causes of non stop talking are ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder) and poor self esteem problems.  Criteria C of the inattentive type of ADHD states: “often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly.”  Criteria F of the hyperactivity/impulsivity type states “often talks excessively.”  All the official criteria can be found at http://pks.947.myftpupload.com/AD-H-Dcr.htm.   Obsessive compulsive disorder is an unlikely possibility. The BPD commonly coexists with ADHD – approximately 50% of the time.  The criteria can be found at http://pks.947.myftpupload.com/DSM.htm.
