Why Am I Sleeping So Terribly?

Why Am I Sleeping So Terribly?

    QUESTION:

    Dear Dr. Heller,

I’m a 31 year old woman with a sleeping problem.  I catch myself sleep walking a lot lately.  Sometimes I also have nightmares.  I wake up my husband screaming at night .  I really thought that I’d out grow this.  Can you help me?

    ANSWER:

Nightmares and sleepwalking are very concerning.  You will likely need a sleep study to see if sleep apnea is playing a role.  I’d also recommend looking at the screening test to see if you are having complications from another diagnosis (or more than one).  Valium and similar medications can help suppress REM sleep, which may be a problem here.
