Question: Why would a doctor subscribe Zoloft for a 85 year old woman that all of a sudden starts having delusions of ghosts and people in the room with her when she wakes up from naps or sleeping. Zoloft sounds like a anti depression chemical problem. What has delusions to do with depression?Just curious–thanks. Dr. Heller’s Answer: Senility is the major sign of depression in the elderly. Depression with psychotic features happens relatively frequently as well. Depression can also markedly impair sleep and cause nightmares.Zoloft and other antidepressants are safer than antipsychotics.
