Borderline Personality Disorder: Girlfriend of a BPD Experiencing Frustration

Q. I met my boyfriend online about 4 months ago. He and I could talk for hours over the phone and not be tired of it. Then he asked me to come over to see him (about 2000 miles away). I agreed, thinking that we both wanted the same in life and willing to take that step.

Two days after I got there he told me that he would like it if I left earlier, that he felt trapped by having me there all the time. I didn’t know why, wondering what I had done wrong. He finally explained that it wasn’t me, that it was he that couldn’t deal with someone around and that he truly did care for me. The rest of the week was wonderful, we had a great time and leaving wasn’t easy for neither of us.

When I came back home he became distant. I knew he had things in his life to resolve (he was in a abusive home and with alcoholic parents) but I wanted to be with him again. He told me later on that while he was in the Army he had been diagnosed with BPD. He’s never been able to have a stable relationship though he really desires one. He just cannot deal with everything going on right now and says he needs his space. I couldn’t give that to him being such a needy person.

He had recollections of being sexually abused also but couldn’t remember everything, only bits and pieces. He wanted to get the help, and finally found a therapist he liked. He wanted me to be there with him when they would hypnotize him. I wasn’t sure if I should buy a ticket and go, I was afraid of him telling me to leave early. He told me he was sure and really needed me now. So I bought the ticket the next day. Well the day after he changed his mind… couldn’t afford the therapy. So now he doesn’t want me to go and see him. Tells me he wants to get his life back in order first.

I really do care about him and do love him from what I know of him. He wants the help, he wants to be able to pursue a normal loving relationship, but right now can’t seem to handle it. He’s afraid of me coming down to see him, asks me to leave him the space he needs. I am willing to do that now. I don’t want to lose him.

I feel hopeless right now. I want to be there for him but I just don’t know how to handle everything. I feel like I’m on a huge roller coaster ride. All I know is that I do want him in my life, hopefully someday as husband and wife. I’m worried about him.. I want to help him, be there for him, and try to understand him and what’s going on right now…..

A. There is an old saying: “I wanted love in the worst way, and that’s just how I got it.” If you completely eliminate the BPD from your story, you clearly are having problems yourself. You’ve only known this individual for 4 months, and at that via e-mail, your experiences with him haven’t been good, he described to you a need for counseling and a refusal to pursue it, you don’t feel good in the relationship, and yet you wrote “All I know is that I do want him in my life, hopefully someday as husband and wife.” Why?

You definitely need to get some help and find out how to act in your own best interests, especially before you become a parent. Counseling for you would be an excellent idea. I very strongly recommend you read the book “Are You the One For Me” by Barbara DeAngelis.

The opportunity to be in a warm, loving, supporting and nurturing relationship is a special gift God has given to all of us. It’s important to know yourself, become the person the kind of person you want would want, and be happy in everything you do. When you look to others to bring you happiness, all you’ll ever find is disappointment, frustration and pain – that’s not what others are there for.

Borderline Personality Disorder and Attachment to Counselors.

Q. I have BPD and come from a family where my dad was never home because he is a workaholic and my mom was both physically and emotionally abusive. She never told me that she loved me and was not nurturing at all. I have a younger sister who I never got along with as she was my mom’s baby. We fought constantly. I had an uncle that attempted to molest me but my cousin woke up in the nick of time. I have two children of my own whom I love so much and make sure they get quality nurturing, but due to my illness and BPD my children were taken away from me from DCFS and they now live with their paternal grandparents. I have a lot of anger and resentments within me that need help, but I try to ignore it.

I can relate with others about abandonment. My main problem is attachment to professionals – I have had so many different counselors and at least half of them I have become attached to. When they realize they are in too deep, they leave and I am the one suffering from this feeling of abandonment. The pain is deep and even more so when they will not have closure and/or not allowed to have closure with me. That drives me to want to have contact with them even more. It leaves me feelings all alone, empty and frustrated.

Does anyone else feel this way or have this same issue? What do they do to deal with that? I am looking for any answer I can get.

I am not in any individual therapy at this time, but really need it and no DBT Skills Training team to help me either. I am on medication which consists of Zoloft – 100mg daily and Zyprexa – 2.5mg once a day. My main diagnosis is depression and BPD. I appreciate any input you can give me.

A. Your note is like so many others. I personally did a study comparing Prozac to Zoloft – Prozac was so far more effective that I never recommend it again.

If you do a literature search (Patty may already have this on the Website), Prozac is the only antidepressant to have worked on everyone with the BPD. Zyprexa is a new antipsychotic, it is not as effective in my experience as Risperdal.

The treatment principals remain the same:

1) Get all the correct diagnoses (the BPD is rarely experienced alone)

2) Get all the correct diagnoses treated properly

3) Retrain your brain. While I don’t mean you minimize your suffering and how you learned self defeating defense mechanisms, all that matters is from now on. I see so many borderlines who were abuse victims, and their therapists want them to read book after book about being abused. Let’s get this straight:

a) it was awful and should never have happened

b) the perpetrators were sick themselves

c) it never did make sense and never will make sense

d) you need to learn what you can learn from the past and move on.

e) all that really matters is where you go from here – why relive the traumas?

f) learn how to be a successful and happy person and concentrate on the rest of your life. Zig Ziglar’s tape series is the best thing you can do in this regard

It’s also important to understand that you absolutely positively can have a happy and successful life, but you can’t accomplish it doing what you’ve done before.

Is No Help Better Than The Wrong Help? IS NO HELP BETTER THAN THE WRONG HELP? Is No Help Better Than The Wrong Help? Question: Is no help better than the wrong help? I am both a student of psychology and a borderline patient.  Until I read your website, I felt as if I were the only person to hold the beliefs I do about BPD.  After educating myself as much as possible about the illness, I lost a lot of hope of ever recovering.  I currently don’t have many close relationships, AND, if I do decide to become close with someone, I am open about my emotions and try explaining to them as much as I can about my “weird” emotions.  So right now my life is like my own case study.  I am watching and only feeling the negative emotions when I have an episode. When I was younger, I was physically and emotionally abused.  I remember pretending that I was not myself so that I did not have to feel the pain of the abuse.  Now, I feel as if I developed a second self that gains control when I am being abusive or dealing with stress.  When I’m not acting “like a borderline”, I feel that I fully understand what is wrong and am willing to do what it takes to get better.  But, once I snap, I lose my rational self and all reasoning seems to be pointless. The hardest thing for me to accept is that professional help doesn’t seem to be the answer.  I don’t agree with the way they want to treat me. I guess my question to you is, would you recommend professional help even if it isn’t the type of help that you (and I) think is necessary?  Or is no help better than the wrong help?  What can I do for now until I find an answer that makes sense for treating such a controversial illness? Dr. Heller’s Answer: First, I believe the BPD to be a neurological disorder that causes psychological damage.  It needs to be treated medically. Counseling is rarely effective until the medications are right.  While going over past events for historical purposes is reasonable, the therapy needs to be emphasizing now and the future.  The past was bad, but it’s time to move on.  Focusing on painful experiences causes more dysphoria (anxiety, rage, depression and despair) and is usually self-defeating. DBT has been successful in some aspects of treating the BPD (particularly reducing self-mutilation and suicide attempts) by focusing on the here and now. Hospitalization, particularly for self-mutilation, has not been shown to have benefits and can make many individuals worse. The wrong medications can make things worse, particularly Elavil (amitriptyline) and benzodiazepines like Xanax (alprazolam).  Taking ineffective medications causes the individual to lose hope, which can be very devastating in an individual who feels suicidal. CAN STIMULANT AB– USE CA– USE THE BPD? Can Stimulant Abuse Cause the BPD? Ask The Doctor Dr. Leland Heller Biological Unhappiness Can Stimulant Abuse Cause the BPD? Can Stimulant Abuse Cause the BPD? CAN STIMULANT AB– USE CA– USE THE BPD? Can Stimulant Abuse Cause the BPD? Question: My girlfriend is suffering from borderline personality disorder.  We both believe it was induced by her abuse of stimulants for two years straight a few years ago.  Before that, her life was considerably more stable.  I read that there is a syndrome like BPD that is induced by drug abuse. My current problem is this: She was previously involved in an off-and-on relationship where she was psychologically addicted to an abusive man who lies, cheats, etc.  During our relationship she has gone back and forth to him several times, been caught at it, and finally appears to have ended it.  After her final bout with him she went to the opposite extreme, telling me she wants to marry me and asking me to move in with her, and foolishly I moved in with her knowing she would have the same cyclical reaction I have seen in her when I spend too much time with her.  Suddenly I disgust her and she wants “space” and wants me to move out after I’ve already blown all my money on rent and bills with her. She has done something similar to this before, so I fully expected it, but I still don’t know what to do.  At my urging she has recently started DBT and should have a psychiatrist soon who I hope will prescribe meds for her. Her mother is a doctor who has previously supplied her with Wellbutrin to help her stop smoking, which it definitely did not do.  I have read about some side effects of Wellbutrin, and have seen some of those side effects in her, and I am concerned. Within the next week I’m afraid I’ll have to find somewhere else to live, but I’m hoping that when her meds change she may change also. I have read Stop Walking on Eggshells, Life at the Border, Borderline Personality Disorder Demystified, I Hate You, Don’t Leave Me, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in the Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, and various other books on the subject, as well as online resources, but I still don’t feel that I have all the answers. She doesn’t really see that her current way of looking at me is part of her mood swings.  It’s like she’s lost in them, and every time seems to believe that’s just the way she feels, as if it’s not going to change again, but I’ve been observing this cycle for so long that I know she will love me again.  It’s so frustrating. Can you offer any tips?  It’s taking a toll on me. Dr. Heller’s Answer: The BPD generally starts at puberty.  If you are correct, and the symptoms were not present prior to the abuse of stimulants a few years ago, something else is likely to blame and not the BPD. One of the hallmarks of the BPD is the persistence of symptoms. You wrote the she was “considerably more stable” — which is not the same as writing that she was stable prior to the stimulant use. A key determining factor for the BPD is whether the symptoms have been present since the onset of adolescence.  If she does indeed have the BPD, the right medications will make a huge difference, and as always she’ll need to be evaluated and treated for comorbid diagnoses like ADHD, bipolar, GAD, OCD and OCPD. There are occasional stories of individuals getting the BPD from massive head injuries, but I’ve never seen in person or read any reports of anyone with no BPD symptoms suddenly developing the BPD from stimulant abuse. If indeed there were no BPD symptoms prior to the stimulant abuse, she may have developed toxic psychosis or something similar from the stimulant abuse, which could have resulted in a rapidly cycling bipolar phenomenon, possibly even schizoaffective disorder.  Getting the correct diagnoses is crucial so the proper medications can be prescribed. You will likely benefit from counseling yourself. Can Stimulant Abuse Cause the BPD? 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Ask the Doctor Home Can Stimulant Abuse Cause the BPD? Is There Anything That Could be Done for my Stepson with Schizophrenia and BPD? IS THERE ANYTHING THAT COULD BE DONE FOR MY STEPSON WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA AND BPD? Is There Anything That Could be Done for my Stepson with Schizophrenia and BPD? Question: My stepson, 21, has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.  Problems started from 14 and a half years of age. We have asked for psychological, forensic, adult ADHD assessments to be carried out but are still waiting.  He is impossible to live with as he becomes very abusive and aggressive, especially when the word “no” is mentioned.  He has been in the care of the social services who now cannot find anywhere for him as he has ruined every placement.  He appears to self destruct.  The only person missing out is himself.  The best way to describe him is that he keeps cutting off the hand that feeds him.  He is now getting in trouble with the police as he has nowhere to stay.  I feel I can’t help as he is breaking up the family, but I still believe he has not had the correct diagnosis.  I could go on, but this gives a flavour. Advice? Dr. Heller’s Answer: It sounds like a heartbreaking situation.  The major treatment for schizophrenia is an atypical antipsychotic medication such as Zyprexa, Risperdal, Abilify and others.  If the BPD is present with schizophrenia the combination of Prozac (fluoxetine), Tegretol (carbamazepine) and Zyprexa (olanzapine) usually gets them significantly better — if they’ll take the medication.  Since Zyprexa causes such significant weight gain I will usually switch to an alternate antipsychotic once the individual is stabilized.  All three of these medications have scientific studies to back them up in the BPD, plus Tegretol and Zyprexa have been shown to help with bipolar if that is present.
